I am pediatrician and professor in Bioethics and Health Law at the Leiden University Medical Centre. In the latter role I am head of the Department of Medical Ethics and Health Law. Also, I am chair of the Centre for Ethics and Health (CEG) - a partnership between the Health Council and the Council for Public Health & Society (RVS). I work as both a pediatrician and an ethicist in various committees and advisory and supervisory boards, including The Central Committee on Research Involving Human Subjects (CCMO) and the Health Council of The Netherlands. My approach to health (care) topics and research is from a Global Health Ethics perspective. Within this perspective, significant roles are played by concepts like epistemic injustice, implicit bias, and health disparities. Through this lens, I address questions about the goals of healthcare, scarcity and how to achieve a genuinely fair distribution of care and health technology innovation, considering the needs of vulnerable populations, financial considerations and ecological sustainability. Trained as a pediatrician specialized in pediatric endocrinology, I treat children and adolescents who need somatic follow-up because of their psychiatric condition (e.g. eating disorder, psychosis) and adolescents with genderdysphoria. In 2021, I worked as a doctor in the Moria refugee camp in Lesbos, and in 2022 in a shelter for Ukrainian refugees in Krakow
